Graves daños al producirse un incendio en la sala de máquinas, que estaba siendo renovada, cuando se encontraba amarrado y en lastre en Port Neches, Texas. Ciento cincuenta residentes en las proximidades del puerto fueron evacuados debido al riesgo de una gran explosión. Los cuarenta tripulantes a bordo pudieron abandonar el buque sin sufrir daños a excepción de un trabajador de tierra que fué ingresado en un hospital. El buque continuó ardiendo durante cuatro días produciéndose explosiones intermitentes
While lying laid up in an empty condition at Port Neches, Texas, a major fire broke out in the engine room while she was being renovated. This led 150 people leaving near the port area being evacuated for fear of a major explosion. All the crew of about 40 managed to leave the ship without any injures being caused but one of the shore workers on board was taken to hospital. The fire raged for four days with intermitent explosions

When the tug tried to anchor the tanker closer to the harbour breakwater, the MARA HOPE drifted aground just under one mile from Fortaleza breakwater. Whit all subsequent refloating attempts failing, the wreck was abandoned as a total loss
